Job Description:
Forensic Attorney
The candidate will attends training on a regular basis to stay current in forensic litigation, Life Without Parole, and Death Penalty litigation; Communicates and consults with division supervisors and team leaders to identify cases that may have forensic issues significantly impacting guilt / innocence; Conducts legal and factual review of cases to identify and evaluate forensic issues; evaluates legal and factual evidence for and against the client, engages in pretrial motions practice focusing on challenging the admissibility of forensic evidence, and takes and defends depositions; Consults with client and interviews witnesses as needed to provide effective representation; Consults with forensic experts as needed to effectively represent the client including forensic experts in mental health and intellectual disabilities; Communicates with client on a regular basis through phone conversations, jail visits or in person interviews, Communicates with client's family to keep them updated on progress of case; Communicates with mitigation specialist to direct and supervise mitigation investigation; Litigates cases in a team setting which may include another attorney, mitigation specialist, investigator, and paralegal; Communicates and consults with other team members to identify litigation goals; Consults with prosecuting attorney to negotiate case disposition to include plea agreements and other disposition; Litigates cases to jury or court as needed. Bachelor's degree and law degree and five (5) years of experience in criminal litigation is required. Must be qualified pursuant to the Indiana Public Defender Commission Guidelines to try a murder case as lead counsel or willing to become so qualified within one hundred and eighty days (180) of accepting the position. Must be committed to on-going education and training in the field of forensic science as well as in litigating Death Penalty and Life Without Parole cases. Expected to maintain Criminal Rule 24 status. Strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills are required along with top level interpersonal and facilitation skills. Computer knowledge is a must.
