Must be: a United States citizen, resident of Yuma County at the time of appointment, of good moral character, a duly licensed member of the State Bar of Arizona, and a resident of the State of Arizona for a period of not less than 5 years immediately preceding appointment; achievement or distinction in various areas of the law and litigation consistent with the duties of this Judge Pro Tempore position are desirable; candidates must not have any disciplinary matters pending before the State Bar Disciplinary Board; the Arizona Constitution, Article VI, 22, requires that judicial nominees must be at least 30 years of age, of good moral character, and admitted to the practice of law in and a resident of the state for five years immediately preceding appointment. Article VI, 37, requires that a nominee shall be less than 65 years of age at the time of appointment;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the legal principles and precedents and their application; knowledge of the statutory and constitutional law of the State of Arizona; knowledge of family, civil, criminal, constitutional and administrative law; the candidate must have the ability to present statements of fact and law through clear communication and logic in written and oral form; ability to define issues, perform legal research, analyze problems, evaluate and make appropriate findings and recommendations; ability to think critically; and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Job Description:
Justice Court On-Call Judge Pro Tempore
Duties: Preside over and hear a variety of matters in all case types including Criminal, Civil, Family, Probate, Mental Health and Juvenile Court. In the course of hearing these cases, interpret, enforce and carry out current laws; exercise the same powers and duties as a judge of the court in assigned cases, with the same jurisdiction with respect to any infraction or small claims action; the Judge Pro Tempore will be expected to perform a variety of duties as exemplified below: Family law: protective order hearings; non-jury trials, conduct child support calendars; including Order to Show Cause and contempt; Civil: conduct hearings and trials for all civil case types; mental health hearings; Specialty Courts; criminal: conduct arraignments, handle pretrial hearings, criminal calendars, and trials; Juvenile delinquency: conduct detention hearings, pre-trials, jurisdictional hearings, advisory hearings, adjudication hearings, and probation violation hearing; Juvenile dependency: conduct initial detention hearings, ex-parte, law and motion, dispositional hearings, permanency planning for long-term foster care, guardianship or adoption.
