Qualifications: Qualifications: Law Degree with 1-2 years legal experience. Licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin. Prior practice in the area of Mental Health Commitments under Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 51.20. Prior experience in the area of Family Law or Child Support. Prior experience performing legal research and provision of supporting memorandum or briefs to lead counsel on various areas of law.
Required or preferred skills: Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including statutes, case records, case management and other handbooks, etc. Ability to prepare a variety of documents including Court orders, motions, summons, etc. Ability to use and interpret medical, legal, and accounting terminology. Ability to communicate effectively with Judges, Family Court Commissioner, Court Commissioner, Attorneys, Physicians, Child Support Specialists, consultants, witnesses, clients, and the general public verbally and in writing. Significant experience in legal research, analysis and legal writing in various areas of law. Experience litigating appeals. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computers, calculators, photocopier, and fax machine. Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of others. Ability to make recommendations regarding the selection of employees. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages, and make use of the principles of descriptive statistics and statistical inference.

Job Description:
Assistant Corporation Counsel
Duties: Reporting to the Corporation Counsel, prepares for and makes court appearances regarding child support and other cases. Performs related duties including drafting legal documents, and providing information and assistance to clients, attorneys, and the general public. Significant focus on research and appellate work including Chapter 51 appeals to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. Makes appearances at various Court hearings including actions to establish support, actions to establish arrears and payment on arrears, actions to modify support, etc. Drafts various legal documents including summons and petitions to commence paternity proceedings, orders for appearance, blood test orders, discovery demands, jury instructions, etc. Represents the County/State in Child Support matters as well as matters establishing the paternity of non marital children. Supervises paternity specialist. Conducts research on pertinent decisions, laws, regulations, and other matters pertaining to cases. Represents the State on Court appeals. Works with various specialists, answering legal questions, approving legal documents, and reviewing cases. Provides information and assistance to clients, the general public, attorneys, and others regarding cases, settlements, and general questions. Participates in administrative staff meetings. Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required. Represents the State and County on Chapter 51 mental health and Chapter 54, 55 guardianship and protective placement proceedings, in a back up capacity. Performs research, analysis and writing tasks in support of corporation counsel's office regarding various areas of law. Appellate practice including research, brief writing and representation of the County at the Court of Appeals and/or Supreme Court. Performs other duties as assigned.
