Qualifications: The candidate should have a Law degree with six to nine(6-9) years experience practicing family, juvenile, and general law. Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin, and in good standing. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computer terminal, calculator, and telephones. Ability to make recommendations regarding the selection, discipline, and discharge of employees. Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including motions, orders, stipulations, notices, letters, purchase orders, law books and journals, etc. Ability to prepare a variety of documents including findings and decisions, temporary orders, letters, budgets, time sheets, etc. Ability to use and interpret legal terminology. Ability to communicate effectively with litigants, attorneys judges, Clerk of Courts, mediators, witnesses, County Board members, and others verbally and in writing.

Job Description:
Family Court Commissioner
The candidate will hold hearings and issues orders regarding child custody and support, divorce, paternity, domestic abuse and harassment injunctions, etc. Sets bond where persons are arrested on paternity warrants. Reviews and signs or rejects domestic abuse and harassment temporary restraining orders, orders to show cause, warrants, orders for income withholding, etc. Communicates with the public regarding Family Court policies and procedures. Directs Family Court Mediation Program by setting policy and procedures and meeting regularly with supervisors and staff to deal with issues. Reviews and accepts or rejects mediated custody and placement agreements and fee waiver requests. Prepares departmental budget and justifies it to County Executive and committee of jurisdiction. Works with other department heads to assure cooperation and harmonious service and to develop new programs and services. Communicates with the Bar regarding Family Court policies and procedures. Researches legal issues. Assigns and monitors work of Secretary/Court Reporter. Ensures that information regarding Family Law matters is available to the public and is up-to-date. Communicates with Circuit Court Judges regarding Family Law matters, policies and procedures and assists in keeping local court rules up-to-date. Attends continuing legal education classes to maintain professional competency. Prepares performance evaluations for Secretary/Court Reporter and Family Court Program Supervisor; reviews evaluations of other Department staff. Reviews budget, payroll, and other journals. Sets support in alternate care cases. Performs duties of the Court Commissioner during absences. Takes overflow cases in small claims, mental health commitments, juvenile detention, criminal, traffic, and other hearings. Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
